Known for it’s breathtaking sceneries, fresh air, green hills covered by pine forests, the Black Forest is one of the most beautiful areas in south west Germany in the land of Baden-Wurttemberg. Is not visited only for it’s beauties, but also for the Cuckoo Clock route, which gathers a lot of tourists every year.

The Cuckoo Clock route unfolds over 320 kilometers almost in a circular path, starting from Villingen-Schwenningen. The route passes through cities like Titisee-Neustadt, Triberg, Schonach, Hornberg, Schonwald, Furtwangen, St. Georgen.
Among the most visited cities is Triberg, known for Germany’s highest waterfall and for the Black Forest Museum (Schwarzwaldmuseum). There are plenty of shops where you can see a great variety of hand made cuckoo clocks. There is also a paid parking area. Most of the time, especially in the summer, it’s pretty hard to find a spot.

You can get a lot of information about the manufacturing of the clocks from the shop’s staff and an authentication certificate is provided for every clock bought. The costs are between few hundreds to few thousands and sometimes they can even be negotiated.

You’ll need quiet a while to enjoy the multitude of models exposed on the walls and their amazing details. Wood figurines carefully crafted create moments of German’s life.

A walk in the center of Triberg will definitely surprise you with it’s beauty. There are a lot of shops and restaurants on the main street. You can find down the road Turkish bakeries, and surprisingly a lot of Italian stores. Even if there are a lot of tourists, the city doesn’t seem crowded.

Take a break to taste one of the best Black Forest cakes, with chocolate and cherries and a German coffee in one the confectionery shops. The multitude of sweets will definitely make it hard to choose only one.

After the break, you can visit the Triberg Waterfall, which is the highest in Germany. It’s in a walking distance from the center of the town, going uphill, on the left side of the main road. The river Gutach falls 163 over 7 waterfalls, creating a charming scenery, cooling the air and spreading water drops in the surroundings. Take some time to relax listening it’s whispers and watching the squirrels running around.

You can continue your journey on the alleys of the park, walking uphill to see the waterfall from above. The elevation is quiet abrupt, so you need comfortable shoes and you may even need to rest from time to time. Depending of the season, you can find blackberries and raspberry on the edges of the path. On returning, the city of Triberg surrounded by pine trees, lies mysterious in front of your eyes. Such a nice view!

Just 3 km from Triberg, there is the Schonach village, where people come to visit the largest cuckko clock in the world. It has the size of a small house and for a fee of 2 euro, it can be visited inside. A nice lady will tell you it’s history and how it has been built. And if you have enough patience , every fix hour, the Cuckoo gets out of the clock’s nest and starts to sing.

Going by car 10 kilometers from Triberg, you’ll find the Hornberg village. Here you can visit the House of the Black Forest clocks. The clocks craftsmanship is amazing.

This trip it can be a very nice journey for one day. Prepare to be fascinated by the wooden handmade clocks and by the beauty of the Black Forest.
